The Stop Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project has drawn attention to Maryland’s General Assembly decades-long inability to properly manage power requirements. This crisis has exposed systemic failures among legislators and energy regulators, threatening the stability and affordability of electricity for Marylanders.

A proposal to string a high voltage power line from New Jersey to Virginia has sparked outrage here in Maryland. The proposed power line provides zero power to Maryland, all is dedicated to a data center in Virginia.

Why are Maryland’s power commissioners comfortable with placing an “extension cord” from New Jersey to Virginia? This proposal involves taking Maryland farmland to power data centers in Virginia while providing little to no benefit to Marylanders. PJM, the regional transmission organization, has projected that Maryland will not have sufficient power resources to meet growing electricity demands. This shortfall is exacerbated by government mandates to transition to all-electric appliances, vehicles, and lawn care equipment. At the same time, environmentalists are pushing to close all fossil-fueled power plants, forcing Maryland to increasingly rely on out-of-state power purchases. This dependency will drive costs up for residents, with households expected to see an average increase of $400 this year alone. “The demand will go up, and the supply will decrease. We are looking at rapidly increasing costs,” warned Senator Chris West.

Senator West has introduced six legislative proposals to address this pressing issue:

  1. Mandate a Comprehensive Power Needs Study: Conduct a study of Maryland’s power requirements by December 31, 2025. PJM decisions should be postponed until the General Assembly reviews the study in 2026. This study would project power needs over the next 5, 10, and 15 years and recommend reducing imported power to no more than 25%, compared to the current reliance of up to 70%.

  2. Keep the Brenton Shores Power Plant Open: Prevent the closure of this critical facility to maintain in-state power generation.

  3. Restore BGE’s Power-Generating Authority: Repeal the 1999 General Assembly law that required BGE to divest from power generation, allowing it to establish new plants.

For details on the additional legislative solutions, listen to Senator West at the 31:00 minute mark: https://www.facebook.com/100064403933799/videos/9002808453140134

Richard Collins, Maryland GOP Third VP, proposed a pro-nuclear energy approach. He highlights the book Nuclear Revolution: Powering the Next Generation, which makes a compelling case for small, centrally located nuclear power stations. Mr. Collins also shared a detailed list of Who’s Who decision-makers involved in the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project initiative, emphasizing the importance of transparency in this process.

Joanne Frederick, leader of the Stop Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project initiative, has raised awareness about the massive land grab involved in this project, which offers no tangible benefits to Maryland taxpayers. You can hear her insights at the 48:00 minute mark: (https://www.facebook.com/100064403933799/videos/9002808453140134)

How You Can Help:

  1. Write to the Maryland Public Service Commission to express your opposition: Email piedmontcomments.psc@maryland.gov

  2. Contact Governor Wes Moore and voice your opposition to the current proposal: https://md.accessgov.com/governor/Forms/Page/cs/contact-the-governor/0

  3. Support Senator West’s legislation - Track legislation here: https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite

  4. Contact legislators, see list below.

In conclusion, Maryland is at a critical crossroads. The state’s power infrastructure and legislative decisions have long been neglected, placing undue burdens on Maryland taxpayers and jeopardizing our energy independence. However, solutions are within reach. By supporting proactive legislation, advocating for sensible energy policies, and holding decision-makers accountable, Marylanders can chart a path toward a more reliable and equitable energy future. With your help, we can ensure that our state’s power needs are met without sacrificing farmland, affordability, or autonomy.
